Also known as Bog Arum, Water-dragon, or Wild Calla, this hardy perennial is a native to North America. A member of the Arum Family, Water Arum is an aquatic herb found in the Algonquin Highlands in wetlands such as bogs or swamps, and along shores of lakes, rivers and ponds.
Its glossy leaves are thick, heart-shaped, grow on a long 20 30 cm stalk. These stems rise from long, underwater rhizomes. The white ‘flower’ is not, in fact, the flower, but a spathe or modified leaf. The true flower has no petals or sepals, but is a knob-shaped spadix that has tiny, yellow flowers. Its fruit are bright red berries.
