PURPLE PITCHER PLANT
Sarracenia purpurea
REMEMBER: It is an offence to pick wildflowers in any provincial park.

Pitcher plant, a member of the Pitcher Plant family, is a perennial plant found in bogs and swampy areas of the Algonquin Highlands. From June to July you will find this plant displaying its ‘flower’, which, as identified by its name, is pitcher shaped. It is about 5-7 cm wide with 5 curved petals that have purplish-red veins. It grows to a height of up to 50 cm.

The downward pointing hairs inside help trap insects that are attracted to the plant’s musty smell that occurs from water trapped in its tube. The Pitcher plant then digest these insects.
