Twinflower is also known as American Twinflower and Longtube Twinflower. This native biennial is a member of the Honeysuckle family.
Twinflower has, yes, twin pinkish-white flowers. The very fragrant flower is bell-shaped with 5 lobes and nodding. It blooms from June to July. This broadleaf has oval or rounded leaves that are opposite on the creeping stem. The light green leaves are 1-2 cm long. There are numerous short and hairy stems rising from the stolon (its primary method of reproduction), buried shallow in the moist, sandy soil of pine wooded areas. Its height is less 10 cm.
Its fruit is a small, dry, one-seeded capsule which is dispersed by attaching to animals. Twinflower is easily killed by a forest fire. The plant was once used by Native Americans to brew a tea.
