Also known as Gravel Plant, Ground Laurel, May Flower, Mountain Pink, and Winter Pink, this perennial evergreen is a member of the Heath family. One of the earliest spring flowering plants of the Algonquin Highlands, it has very fragrant blossoms. It is a low growing evergreen, creeping along the ground.
Its flowers are pinkish-white, with 5-spreading petals, waxy, and up 1 to 2 cm long. These blossoms appear in May. They grow on creeping stems that are hairy. Its yellowish orange fruit is a five sided capsule, developing in August that has tiny seeds in a white pulp. Its leaves, up to 7.5 cm in length, alternate along the stems, and have short hairs. It reproduces with fibrous roots with rhizomes.
You can find the Trailing Arbutus in mixed forest, primarily in Pine and Black Spruce, preferring sandy or rocky areas with acid soil.
