LOWBUSH BLUEBERRY
Vaccinium angustifolium
REMEMBER: It is an offence to pick wildflowers in any provincial park.

A member of the Heath family, this commonly found berry is also known as Early Low Blueberry and  Low Bush Blueberry. A favourite food for birds and mammals (especially black bears!), you can find them in forested, rocky or sandy areas, swamps, bogs, or any drained locations with sandy soils. Its blossoms are bell-shaped and usually white or pinkish-white and have shiny, dark green, smooth leaves with toothed edges. This perennial, spreading shrub has thin woody branches.

Blueberry bushes grows 6 to 40 cm, but those growing in the forest are less likely to flower and bear fruit.  The fruit is bright blue-coloured and grows in clusters. It flowers from May through June and its berries ripen late July through August.

Blueberry fruit is picked and eaten raw or processed into jams or dried fruit.
