FRINGED POLYGALA
Polygala paucifolia
REMEMBER: It is an offence to pick wildflowers in any provincial park.

This orchid-like plant is a member of the Milkwort family. It is also known as Gay Wings, and Fringed Milkwort. Its pinkish purple flowers grow slightly above evergreen leaves, which is why it is sometimes called Flowering Wintergreen.

A perennial of the Algonquin Highlands, the blossom is 1-1.5 cm long, has  a bushy fringed lower petal and two purple wing-like sepals. It blooms May-June and can be found in coniferous forest areas that are shaded and have moist soil. Its oval leaves alternate, on the stem, growing to a tiny 5-15 cm tall.
