SPOTTED CORAL-ROOT
Corallorhiza maculata
REMEMBER: It is an offence to pick wildflowers in any provincial park.
Also known as the Summer Coral-Root, the Spotted Coral-Root much like Indian Pipe plant found in the Algonquin Highlands area. They are an another species which doesn’t produce leaves or require chlorophyll as a energy source. Instead, it is believed that the Coral-Root obtains its energy from dead leaves, through a fungus that is closely related to the plant’s roots, which resemble a piece of coral. The Spotted Coral-Root is identified by their generally pink to wine red petals with reddish spotted sepals, usually 6 to 13 mm in length. However, it’s not uncommon to find unspotted and albino Spotted Coral-Root plants as well.
