Although, the common name of this flower is derived from the red flowers of this species, the Red Trillium is also found with purple, white and sometimes yellow flowers. It is also known as a Nodding Wake-Robin, because its flower tends to dangle. The structure of this ill-scented flower is usually 3 long petals, accompanied by 6 yellow stamens, 3 prominent green sepals and 3 large leaves that are in a whorled arrangement. The Red Trillium flowers early, usually in May, a week or so after the Painted Trillium and is often damaged by the spring freezes and frost. Their preferred habit is shaded, rich, moist areas of the woods where they grow from 15 to 50 cm high.
