SPREADING DOGBANE
Apocynum androsaemifolium
REMEMBER: It is an offence to pick wildflowers in any provincial park.
Spreading Dogbane is also known as Indian Hemp. A member of the Dogbane family, this perennial’s name, dogbane means ‘deceit’ or ‘falsehood’. This is because the milky juice that exudes from any broken part of the plant is poisonous.

From June to July in the Algonquin Highlands, you can find this pretty, pink flowering plant in fields and along roadsides. Its fragrant flower measures approximately 8 mm wide, with 5 spreading lobes. The oval-shaped leaves are opposite on the smooth stem which grow from 10 to 70 cm tall.
