| Algonquin Highlands’ perennial, Orange Hawkweed, also known as Devil's Paintbrush, Orange Paintbrush, Red Daisy, and King Devil. This perennial wildflower is reddish-orange to bright orange in colour and you will find it in open fields and meadows or roadsides from June through to August. First introduced from Europe, its flowers are dandelion-like and grow singly or in bunches, growing to 2.5 cm in diameter, raising to heights of 20 - 50 cm on thin hairy stalks. The stem exudes milky juice when broken. Its leaves grow in a rosette pattern, are 5-15 cm long, and covered by black hairs. Orange Hawkweed has shallow, fibrous roots, also has above ground runners and tiny, feathery seeds for reproduction. |
