The common Dandelion is not found in the Southern Hemisphere! Considered a weed by many, you will find them growing wild in pastures, meadows and along roadsides, just about anywhere it can find a place to grow, as long as it gets sun and moisture from rain. The bright yellow flowers are atop purplish stalks that grow straight up from the root, growing to average height of 10-20 cm. Its leaves are shiny and jagged, growing in a rosette form, close to the ground, 5-15 cm in length.
The Dandelion is an important source of nectar for many insects. Many birds eat its seeds. It’s also a food source for humans; various parts used in salads, making wine and beer, and yes, even coffee!
As the flower matures, it produces seeds, each with a tuft of hair, forming the shape of a ball, waiting to be blown off by the slightest breeze. These seeds can spread for many kilometres.
