Chicory is also known as Wild Succory and Ragged Sailors. A member of the Sunflower family, it is very common along roadsides and in dry fields. Originated from Europe, this biennial reproduces by seed. The brilliant blue flower resembles dandelions and is approximately 4 cm in diameter and bloom from July to late fall. Its leaves are oblong and hairy, and are variable in size and shape. A sticky white juice flows from broken stems and leaves. It grows in height of up to 1.5 m.
The ancient Egyptians and Arabs used the plant for medicinal purposes. The root is used today as an herbal coffee. Leaves are used in salads
