AMERICAN BEECH
Fagus grandifolia
The American Beech’s smooth, light gray bark separates it from almost all other trees of the Algonquin Highlands. The leaves are elongate and ovate with toothed margins. They feel dry and papery. The nuts (beech nuts) are 1-2 cm long in small spine-covered woody husks and ripen in September to November.

The mature tree grows to 30 metres tall and 60 to 100 cm in diameter. American Beech can be expected to live 200 to 300 years or longer. The root system is wide-spreading, but very shallow.

American Beech does best on moist, rich soils and has a definite preference for cooler temperatures. American Beech is the only species of Fagus in North America.
