The White Spruce is one of the most widespread species of trees found in Canada. This tree is known coast to coast but very seldom does it create its own large, pure stands. It is the provincial tree for Manitoba. The White Spruce is found in a variety of locations in and around the Algonquin Highlands region. The tree grows well on loams, silt loams, and clays; yet struggles in sandy locations. In optimal conditions the White Spruce tree can grow up to 30 metres in height. Needles are usually 2 cm in length and very stiff.
At the age of 4 seed production begins, but until the age of 30 years, the quantities are kept low. Depending on the site, strong seed crops happen every 2 to 6 years, more commonly every 10 to 12 years. The White Spruce seeds are a very common food for both Red Squirrels and White-winged Crossbills.
