The Pickerel Frog is medium-sized, about 4-8 cm, and is smooth-skinned that is cream to brown in colour. There are two rows of squarish brown spots running down the back between the dorsolateral folds. Its belly and under surfaces of hind legs are washed with yellowish-orange.
The weak call of the male Pickerel Frog sounds like someone snoring in the distance. The males usually call in May, and egg masses are laid and attached to submerged vegetation. Although nocturnal, the adult Pickerel Frog is most often seen along the edges of slow-moving water or flooded ditches.
Pickerel frogs hibernate from October until March or April. This species is not widespread in the Algonquin Highlands. However, its similarity to the Leopard Frog makes identification difficult for the casual observer.
