Pear-shaped Puffballs, sometimes called Wolf-fart Pears, live up to their name, resembling an inverted pear. They are white and fairly firm, measuring 1.5-5 cm wide and 2.5-5 cm in height. The stem does not protrude above ground, thus hidden. Young mushrooms may have white spines on the body, that later disappears, and whitish interior. As they mature, the flesh becomes yellowish to olive-green colour. They grow in clusters, either spread out or in dense amounts, on dead wood of hardwoods or conifers. The pear-shaped puffballs can be found in Fall and Winter, but fruit in Spring and Summer. As the mushroom reaches maturity it ruptures and releases its brown spore dust that is spread by wind and rain.
