BEAKED EARTHSTAR
Geastrum pectinatum
WARNING: This web site does NOT identify if a mushroom as edible or not.
Please consult an expert PRIOR to consuming ANY wild mushroom or fungus..
The Earthstar is rather small, measuring only 5-10 cm across. As they emerge from the ground, they expand, blooming almost like a flower. During maturity the outer wall splits and forms a collar around the bottom of the spore sac. Eventually the center grey spore sac ruptures and the brown powdery spores emerge. The Earth Star prefers a habitat containing open woods, with cedars, and sandy soil conditions, emerging in early Summer through to Fall. During rain, the rays curl outward exposing the sac. Spores puff out as raindrops hit the sac. It retracts and protects the sac during dryer times.
