This mushroom is one of the most widely distributed and common mushrooms in the World. The Split Gill is generally 1-4 cm wide, has a fan-shaped appearance, and a white to grayish, tough, leathery, and hairy flesh. It adapts to most weather conditions, opening and closing with wet and dry periods to rehydrate. It attaches to dead wood, sticks, logs of deciduous trees and planks or boards. They can be found singly or growing in clusters. They have also been known to stay dry for many years and survive.
