The Pinwheel Marasmius, also known as Collared Horsehair and Horsehair Mushroom, is a very small mushroom, its cap size reaching 2 cm diameter. The white, convex cap has a smooth, brownish center that is depressed and pleated. The wiry, pale stem reaches a height of 1.5-8 cm; it may have stiff hairs and will generally become dark brown to black with age. The part attached to the circular collar on the stem are the gills, which are usually white to yellowish-white. The spore print is distinguished from its white or pale yellowish colour. The Pinwheel Marasmius prefers habitats of hardwood forests, found on sticks and other woody debris and is prevalent from Spring to Fall.
