The Trooping Cordyceps is actually a parasite fungus, attacking its victims through ingestion, with the spores growing and killing the infected organism. They then use this host to flourish and repeating the cycle. The stromata (main stem) is bright orange, fading to yellow with age, and may have dark dots. Digging carefully around the base of the stromata will uncover this parasite’s victim; usually it is an insect pupa. These species may be hard to find, however once one is found, it will be well populated with these.
