LOBSTER MUSHROOM
Hypomyces lactifluorum
WARNING: This web site does NOT identify if a mushroom as edible or not.
Please consult an expert PRIOR to consuming ANY wild mushroom or fungus..
Lobster Mushroom is actually an aggressive fungus that attacks fruiting mushrooms, specifically Russula (Graying Orange Russula) and Lactarius (Delicious Milk Mushroom). This causes abnormal development and a colourization effect of brilliant orange or orange-red. The gills are affected by having short ridges or no development at all. The small dark pimples implanted on the mushroom are actually the parasites fruit bodies. Ascospores are the infected spores that will transmit this fungus to other mushrooms infecting them. They appear as a white to cream powder on the infected mushroom. This fungus has a range of habitats and is prevalent in Summer and Fall.
