The Earth Fan is actually an invading fungus attacking the seedling or stem of many coniferous species. Nicknamed the Smothering Fungus, this invader can be detected from the presence of a collar around the stem. Later the fungus progresses into a fruiting fungus in the shape of a fan, smothering the original seedling. It grows to approximately 10 cm in width and is covered with short stiff hairs. Throughout the year the Earth Fan can be found in humid areas where dense growth occurs and seedlings are shaded.
