The King Bolete lives up to its name with the reddish-brown cap that measures10-20 cm across and stalks that grow to 15 cm tall and 3 cm wide! Its pores vary in colour, from white to yellowish. This mushroom is prevalent during June-October. It is found on the ground, near conifers or in mixed woods. This mushroom seems to have a partnership with trees; the photosynthesis that produces the tree’s sugars are feed to the mushroom, and in return the mushroom aids the tree in absorbing nutrients. Maggots constantly invade the King Bolete as insect larvae prefer this mushroom. This mushroom may appear a lump on the forest floor, as sometimes it does not protrude to far out of the earth.
