The white-brownish flesh stains to a wine-grey-black colour. The white to brownish stalks measure up to 20 cm in height and 5 cm in diameter. It can have red-brown or black dots. The pore surface is indicated by its whitish colour with circular pores and tubes. This mushroom prefers the presence of surrounding Birch (hence one of its common names) and Poplar trees.
