The Lake Whitefish, a schooling fish, has a fondness for deep, cold lakes, and is distinguished by its white belly to silver sides. Its brown back shaded with green. The spawning season occurs in shallower water, between September and January, after the Whitefish matures at approximately age four. Seeing that the water warms the larvae hatch, as they grow past 2 cm they begin their adventure into deeper waters where they will grow to 40-50 cm in length. The Whitefishs diet is that of a bottom feeder, consisting of other species eggs, clams, snails, and plankton and water insects and larvae. This fish is sought by commercial business using trap nets or gillnets, for its tasty fillets. It also falls victim to predators, such as Trout and Pickerel. Some areas have had parasites infect these fish. These areas are restricted from fishing and are for your protection.
