Rainbow trout are native to the Algonquin Highlands regions since the 1870’s.
Its life cycle requires a stream for spawning and a larger body of water for maturation. They are often referred to as steelhead due to their steel gray, silvery appearance. Rainbow Trout have a pinkish or reddish lateral stripe on each side when they live in a stream, have black spots on their head, sides, and fins, and their belly is very pale.
They spawn in streams during the Spring season, where the young remain for 2 to 5 years and feed on insects and small crustaceans. As they mature, they move downstream into larger waters, and feed on other fish.
