LAKE TROUT
Salvelinus namaycush
The Lake Trout favours cold lakes with a depth of 15 meters and greater. This fish does not build a nest; instead eggs during spawning are spread throughout the water. The Lake Trout’s is recognized by its deeply forked tail, dark background, and spotted camouflage markings. The normal weight can vary from 4-23 kg. This fish provides an excellent dish for human consumption, thus accounting for its high commercial value. With their preference of cool water, anglers must adapt to the time of year, while fly fishing can provide catches in the Spring, techniques of capture in deeper water must be used in the Summer and warmer months. Due to population decline from predators and over fishing, commercial fishing is restricted, and stocking of this fish is underway to restore its quantities.
