The Lake Sturgeon can be quite the surprise the first time an angler hooks onto one, with a weight of upwards to 36 kg and 145 cm in length. This fish has a life expectancy of 50 years and spawns only every four to six years, after the female matures at around age fourteen years or upward. The eggs are not deposited in a nest as other fish; these eggs are spread in the water, attaching themselves to underwater vegetation and rocks. The young are generally browner in colour and grow rapidly. The habitat of big rivers and lakes supports its diet of crustaceans, snails, leeches, algae, and small fish. Its appearance of grey plates on its side and facial whiskers distinguish it from other fish. The commercial feasibility for its caviar, leather and tasty meat has damaged the population greatly.
