The Spoonhead Sculpin prefers shallow waters of streams, rivers and lakes but does venture into deeper waters of 200 metres or more. It has an average growth of 6 cm but can reachlengths of 12.5 cm. Its life expectancy is usually to age 6. This fish can be distinguished by its flat, triangle-shaped head, yellowish and dark brown mixed colour, speckled fins and prickles that replaces scales. The diet of this species consists of insects and crustaceans. Spawning takes place in Summer and early Fall. Males may have more than one mate in this season. The male chooses a spot that has rock protection and the courtship begins. The female lays over a thousand eggs with the male providing the maintenance and protection of the nest. This fish commonly falls predator to Lake Trout, Burbot, Whitefish, Walleye, and Northern Pike.
