SLIMY SCULPIN
Cottus cognatus
The Slimy Sculpin lives in deep cooler waters, lakes and streams. A dark colouring of gray, green, or brown, with prickles on its head, this fish grows no longer than 13 cm. With a diet of nymphs, mayflies, caddisflies and insect larvae, this fish is a bottom feeder. Spawning occurs in Spring, with the male finding or constructing the nest. The female lays adhesive eggs (approx 1,400). The male then stands guard over it and aerates the eggs by fanning with its fins. This fish falls prey to Trout species, Burbot and to anglers, for the purpose of bait.
