NORTHERN PIKE
Esox lucius
The Northern Pike, also known as Jack, inhabits cooler ponds, rivers, and lakes with a preference for the high vegetated, weeded areas. Its long, dark green body reaches lengths of 45 – 100 cm. It has yellow coloured spots, rounded tail fins and, of course, its sharp teeth. These characteristics makes the Northern Pike stand out. This predator has a diet of frogs, small fish, crayfish and small birds. The Northern Pike normally reach weights of 6-9 kg. Spawning occurs in April-May in shallow marshes with the eggs adhering to vegetation.
