The Muskellunge are a known predator, growing to sizes of 70-135 cm and often over 22 kg in weight. Their habitat is usually cooler lakes, rivers and swift currents, using the plant vegetation as camouflage. Their diet consists of Yellow Perch, White Sucker, Muskrats, Ducks, Shrews, Mice, Frogs and other fish. Young Muskellunge have even consumed other smaller Muskellunge. They can be identified by their long body, rows of teeth and dark vertical bands on light background, at times spotted or clear. The tips of the tail fin more pointed on this species when compared to others. Spawning occurs in Spring, their eggs are spread in shallow waters over vegetaion. Their well-spirited nature makes them a good competitor for anglers. With their population declining in some areas, resource coordinators ask that you use catch and release, to maintain stock levels. Warning, Muskellunge may accumulate toxins or contaminates in their system; pay attention to fishing bands in certain areas.
