The Yellow Perch are schooling fish and prefer warm, highly vegetated, weedy waters. Yellow Perch are commonly 15 - 30 cm in length and weight 100 - 300 grams. Their olive back, white belly, two dorsal fins and 6 - 8 dark sidebands, yellow to greenish in colour, identify them. They have sharp spines and sharp gill plates.
Spawning occurs in Spring, when the female swims in the weeded areas emitting a string of adhesive eggs (well over 10,000!). Males follow her, fertilizing the eggs. The eggs are left to fend for themselves. The diet of the Yellow Perch consists of water insects, snails, small crayfish, and small fish. A favorite pan fish of anglers, it is also preyed upon by Walleye.
