SPOTTAIL SHINER
Notropis hudsonius
The Spottail Shiner is a member of the Minnow family, reaching sizes of 7-10 cm. This fish is at home in clear streams, rivers, and lakes, thus having a large range. Its lateral line, silver coloured body and the large dark spot on its tail area can distinguish this fish from other Minnows. Spawning occurs in June-July where one hundred to a couple thousand eggs are deposited on sandy bottom areas; the eggs are left to fend for themselves. The Spottail Shiner’s diet consists of larvae, algae, insects, zooplankton, and fish eggs. Anglers favour these fish as bait, however their scales are easily detached.
