LAKE CHUB
Couesius plumbeus
The Lake Chub is a migratory fish that prefers deeper waters in the summer months, but normally resides in streams, ponds and lakes, showing a fondness for graveled bottoms. Spawning occurs in April in streams, and an orange-red mixture on the male’s head during spawning distinguishes it from the female. The features that differentiate this fish from other Minnows are its spineless fins, the dark stripe along its side and the topside colours of brownish green and a reflective silver belly. It grows to a length of approximately 23 cm. The Lake Chub’s diet consists of algae, water insects, petite fish and zooplankton.
