A member of the Minnow family, the Golden Shiner, normally 6-18 cm in length, stands up to its name having a body that is reflective golden, greenish silver. A schooling fish and common resident of calm, clear water, and areas with good aquatic vegetation, the Golden Shiner, upon maturing at 2-3 years, will spawn in Spring and near the beginning Summer months. The eggs adhere to the aquatic vegetation and have been also known to place them in other species nests, thus the other species guard the Golden Shiner eggs. This is a very durable species, so they are very suitable bait for anglers. Their diet usually consists of crustaceans, algae, and water insects.
