The Fathead Minnow species has a territorial male that will even change colour, displaying himself as the dominant male of preferred pond or sluggish moving stream area. After spawning, which could be up to a week long, the male guards and maintains the nest area for another week until hatching occurs. Having a lifespan of approximately two years, the Fathead is identifiable from the darkness in their body combined with a reflective colouring mixture, and a distinct black line on the side. The Fatheads diet consists of diatoms, algae, detritus, and small backboneless species. This Minnow has a value to fisherman as bait.
