The Common Shiner belongs to the Minnow family, ranging in size from 6-10 cm. With a spring spawning, the males can be distinguished during this period because of their back colourization to blue and bellies to red. The Common Shiner is abundant in both warm and cold, clear water, having a fondness for conditions with sand or gravel bottoms. The mainstream diet for this fish is water insects. Being a member of the Minnow family, it is subject to the use as bait for anglers.
