The Mudminnow, a relatively small fish, 9 cm or less in length, prefers cooler, still water with high vegetation found in bogs, marshes, streams and ponds. This fish lives up to its name, using the muddy bottom to hide from predators and tocamouflage itself. This fish has mottled brown-colored bars along its sides and distinct vertical bars near its tail.
As species go, this one is adaptable to low water conditions, as it has the ability to breathe air directly, thus making this species very durable. Their diet consists of plankton, small snails, clams and insects. In April spawning occurs in shallow water. This species does not build a nest; instead the eggs attach themselves to surrounding vegetation, being left to fend for themselves. Their lifespan averages 4 years, and their durability makes them good bait for anglers.
