CREEK CHUB
Semotilus atromaculatus
The Creek Chub a larger member of the Minnow family, ultimately reaching a length of 30 cm, prefers calmer waters. A purple luster in their sides and a shady area on their rear fin accompanies the darker colour of their scales. During the spawning process, the male are easily identifiable from the pink colourization. The nest construction during spawning is the responsibility of the male. After spawning the female of the species may imitate the look of a floating dead fish but is only a temporary condition. Anglers usually treat these fish as catch/release fish, but they are used as bait occasionally.
