BLACKNOSE SHINER
Notropis heterolepis
The Blacknose Shiner, only reaching 5-7.5 cm in size, has a black stripe from its eyes to its tail. It has a yellowy back and silver sides. This fish requires clean, well oxygenated water and will leave polluted areas, thus explaining its decreasing populations in some regions. The primary diet of this minnow consists of small water insects, crustaceans and algae. During breeding season a distinct indication of the male is the black colouring on its fins.

Remember the presence of this species is a positive indicator of good water conditions; let’s all help keep them around.
