JOHNNY DARTER
Etheostoma nigrum
Johnny Darter, a member of the Perch family, inhabits streams and rivers where there are pools and other slack waters.

Along its olive-coloured sides, there is a series of black "w"'s, making Johnny Darters easy to identify. It eats primarily tiny crustaceans and small insect larvae.
Spawning occurs in the Spring, once the male has selected the perfect underside of a rock. The female moves with the male, together laying and fertilizing the eggs immediately.
