The Iowa Darter, a relatively small fish of 13 cm or less, is a dweller of clear streams, ponds and lakes. They are bright green with dark brown splotches on the sides, which fades into a yellowish colouring on its belly. Favouring a diet of amphipods, water insects, as well as small insect larvae, the Darter is too small to be of any attractiveness to an angler. It spawns in March-April, and the vibrantly coloured male completes a dance display to attract the females. Afterward, he becomes protector of the nest and newborns. Some members of the Darter family are on the endangered list for certain areas. More often than not, they live for only 2 or 3 years.
