ROCK BASS
Ambloplites rupestris
The Rock Bass, a member of the Sunfish familly, prefers warm, rocky ,shollow water areas, enjoying water breaks and stone shores. It has five sharp spines on its anal fins. It is mainly brown-olive with a white belly and red eyes, and can reach lengths of 25 cm. Spawning occurs in the Spring in shallow waters. The male builds the nest. When it is ready the female lays some eggs and the male fertilizes them. This process is repeated, then the male stands guard over the nest. Their diet consists of water insects, crayfish, and small fish. The Rock Bass is favoured by anglers as a pan fish delight.
