Its wing span of 5.1 - 8.3 cm., this medium-sized Aphrodite Fritillary is bright orange above with many black dots and lines. There is a large black dot at the base of the forewing. A pale band on the hindwing blends into its dark reddish-orange colour. There are several white spots as well.

In July and August you might find this butterfly anywhere from open meadows to bogs. Adult drink the nectar from flowers. The female lays her eggs singly near Violets. The larvae overwinter then feed on tender violet leaves of spring. The caterpillar is dark brown with orange on the sides and black stripes.
