With a wingspan of 1.9-3.5 cm, the arrival of the Spring Azure signals the return of warm weather. The male has pale blue wings with checkered fringe; females have some black at outer edge of their forewing. In summer the second brood’s colouring differs, having white rather than black above. Females lay their eggs on blossoms of a variety of woody shrubs and flowers including Blueberries, Dogwood, Common Milkweed and Meadowsweets. Caterpillars feed on these flowers and its fruits, and are tended by ants.

In the Algonquin Highlands from May until August, the Spring Azure is found in the edges of moist deciduous forests, roadsides, and brushy areas.
