The Red Admiral butterfly is black with white spots and an orange band on the fore wing and orange border on the brown hindwing. With a wingspan of 4.5 to 5.7 cm, this butterfly has a very erratic, rapid flight.

You may find them in Algonquin Highlands’ deciduous forests, near the edges and meadows bordering the forest, seeking their favourite plants, those in the Nettle family and Hops. Adult feed on sap flows on trees, fermenting fruit, and bird droppings. They drink nectar when these are not available.

Females lay greenish, barrel-shaped eggs singly on the tops of host plant leaves. This will occur twice per year, from May-October. The caterpillar varies in colour from black to, light green and have yellow lateral stripes and branched spines. Adult males are very territorial and will aggressively chase away any other male that comes into their territory.
