This dull purplish-brown skipper, the Northern Broken-Dash has very little pale shading above or below. It gets its name from the markings; the male has a short stigma broken into two separate parts. It also has some paler orangey-brown shading around the stigma. The female has paler marks, which are a little larger. On the underside, these pale forewing marks are repeated. It has an overall wing span of 2.4 to 3.9 cm. This species is often confused with the Dun Skipper, as they are often found in the same areas, dry fields, meadows, and woodland edges.
In the Algonquin Highlands you might find them from late June to early August. Northern Broken-Dash has a slow flight. The female lays one brood per year, in their preferred food is grasses, including Crab Grass and Panic Grasses. The pale green caterpillar has a dorsal stripe of dark green, a dark brown head and pale vertical stripes.
Adult drink the nectar from flowers, preferring white, pink, or purple.
