This small Duskywing has a wing span 2.1 to 3.0 cm. Its upperside is dark brown, patterned in hazy brown patches. The underside has some rows of pale spots, found on the hind wing.

Their favourite food is their namesake, wild Columbines (Aquilegia canadensis), so you might find them in woodlands where these flowers are found. In the Algonquin Highlands, there are two generations a year, found from May to August. Eggs are laid on the underside of Columbine leaves. The pale green larva have a dark green dorsal line and a black head. They feed on the host leaves. Full grown caterpillars from the second brood hibernate. You can find adult Duskywings visiting flowers and mud puddles.
