The Osprey is a large and long winged fish hawk. They are brown above and white below. They have a white head, and a dark line through the eye. The wings of this bird bend on an angle near the tips much like our wrists do. The Osprey produces a loud and musical chirping.
A fish-eating bird, the Osprey searches for prey by soaring over the water, watching the surface below. When prey is spotted near the surface, they dive steeply, breaking the water feet first, trying to grab the fish with their outstretched and razor sharp talons. Quickly resurfacing, it will carry off its prey headfirst back to the nest or another area to eat it. Although found in small numbers, the Osprey is a very visible bird due to its hunting techniques.
They build their nests in the tops of tall dead trees, adding to them each year. They consist of a large mass of sticks and debris, and can reach enormous sizes, even becoming local landmarks. Females lay 2 to 4 white, pink, or pale yellow eggs. There are an average of 30 nesting pairs of Osprey in the Algonquin Highlands each year.
